Questions
What is Naartjie?
Naartjie is a second-hand marketplace for your neighbourhood. You buy and sell with people who live nearby, and there's a community board for questions, recommendations, lost & found and local events.
Is Naartjie free?
Yes. Browsing, posting a listing and chatting are all free. There are no listing fees and no commission.
Does Naartjie handle payments?
No. Naartjie doesn't process payments or hold money. Buyers and sellers pay each other directly, usually in person when they meet. Naartjie is a venue that connects neighbours and is not a party to any transaction.
How do I stay safe when buying or selling?
Meet in a busy public place in daylight, bring a friend, look at it properly before you pay, and keep the conversation in the app. The map shows suggested public meeting spots near you.
Which areas does Naartjie cover?
We're starting in Cape Town South: Claremont, Newlands, Observatory and Rondebosch. Somewhere else? Join the waitlist and we'll email you when your area opens.
How is my personal information protected?
Naartjie follows South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Your phone number and email are never shown on your listings, you talk to people through in-app chat, and you can ask to see or delete your data at any time.
Who can use Naartjie?
You must be 18 or older to use Naartjie. We don't knowingly allow under-18s, and you can report an account that seems to belong to a minor.
What is a Ripeness Level?
Ripeness shows how someone has traded on Naartjie. It goes up with good ratings, finished trades, a confirmed area and time on Naartjie. Everyone starts as New neighbour. We don't publish the exact formula.
